How will YNB implement two-factor authentication?
On October 12th, 2005 the FFIEC issued guidance concerning the need for improved customer authentication methods to protect Internet Banking applications (FIL-103-2005). In response to that guidance, Yukon National Bank will be deploying a true two-factor authentication method for our customers. Financial Institutions will be expected to achieve compliance with the guidance no later than year-end 2006. Additional information can also be found in the Frequently Asked Questions on FFIEC Guidance on Authentication in an Internet Banking Environment.
What is Two-Factor Authentication?
- Something you know, such as a sign-on ID or user name and a PIN or password
- Something you have, such as a Matrix, SmartCard, random number token, or a personal attribute such as a fingerprint or retinal scan
Two-Factor authentication offers identity theft protection by making it difficult for attackers to steal a customers’ online identity. Traditional authentication use username and password pairs to authenticate users. This provides minimal security due to most passwords being easy to guess.
Typical passwords are static and easy to steal, break or crack. Many passwords that are used to access sensitive information are written on post-it notes and often reflect the user’s birthday, anniversary or other family related event.
What are the customer benefits?
- Provides protection against Phishing, Pharming, Spyware, Trojan horse and keystroke recorders
- Matrix values are ONLY known to the customer
- Processes are easy to use and manage
- Replacements of the Matrix are provided as needed via email directly to the customer's email address
How will YNB implement two-factor authentication?
- A sign-on and password, and
- A unique matrix of numbers that is provided to each user. The values in this matrix are used during the sign on process.
Matrixes are delivered to customers via e-mail.
(All customers must have access to an email account to receive their matrix.)
Yukon National Bank will be turning on the Two-Factor system in early November for internal testing. All YNB employees and their families will start using this new Two-Factor system to fully test its operation before making it active for our customers.
Once the system is turned on you will see a slight difference in your sign-on page. Below your password entry, there will be three "Two-Factor" value boxes. Until the Two-Factor requirement has been deployed for all customers, you will NOT need to fill in this information. You will still be able to access your YNB account information by using just your Sign-On ID and Password.
When 2-Factor is enabled for your YNB account you must validate your email address the first time you try to login. Once the email validation form is submitted, the system will email you a unique randomly generated matrix of code values.

We will send out reminder messages to all YNB customers before we begin the testing phase. We will also keep you informed as to when you can expect to begin using the Two-Factor authentication.
Once your account has been activated for 2-Factor and you have received your Matrix via email you will be requested to enter your user ID, Password and 3 unique 2-Factor values from your Matrix.

Card Code: 97
A particular value is identified by its column and row coordinates.
For example, the value at coordinate position D3 is 4. This is just like "Bingo".
When two-factor authentication is activated the customers sign on screen will request three values from the user's matrix as part of the sign on process.

Using the sample matrix above would result in two-factor login information for this screen as: E3=6, C4=4, D1=8
Note: Customers MUST have access to an email account to receive their Matrix.
If at anytime you lose or misplace your matrix you can request a new one by simply clicking the link on the Sign-On page. The link "Request a new matrix. Click HERE:" is located under the "Sign On" button. This will force you back to the e-mail validation form and send you a new randomly generated matrix of code values.
